There is now a rum distillery in Ottawa! It's a small craft distillery (which also makes gin, vodka and some other spirits) called North of 7 Distillery. Their rum is new, only released at some point last December 2014, and given the absence of significant aging is most likely marketing as a mixing rum. However, in the spirit of supporting local producers, I picked up a bottle to try...
Every Monday, I'll be giving an update on the lowest stocks of rums available in the LCBO. My way of giving people a heads up, in case they want to head out to pick up a bottle before they might be all gone.
Appleton 21 - 1 available (call first)
Plantation XO 20th anniversary - 95 available
Kirk and Sweeney - 1 available (call first)
Zaya Gran Reserva - not available yet...soon
66 Gilead - 75 available
Dictator 12 - 36 available
Berry's Caribbean XO - 10 available
Very excited to get this new rum...Don Q Gran Anejo from the Dominican Republic. Very beautiful and solid feeling decanter that will no doubt have a lot of shelf appeal. This rum is very popular, and has garnered international acclaim and won numerous awards. It's the best rum offering from the Serralles Distillery (Don Q products). A truly wonderful addition to the collection!
Very soon, you will be able to get a new rum from the LCBO...Zaya Gran Reserva 12 Year. This is a nice sipping rum, that has won many awards throughout the world and is a best seller throughout the States...in fact many people say that Zaya is what initially opened their eyes to sipping rums (as it's priced much lower in the States and therefore allows many people to pick this up instead of a standard mixer). So good for the LCBO to offer this, and as I've already got a bottle and tried it for myself I'm quite familiar with it, and I've rated it as a mid-range sipper. Unfortunately, it's priced a little high at $69.95 in the LCBO (USA $30-35) which may detract a number of people, however if you have the money, it's a very nice sipper (little sweeter and very smooth), and a nice addition to anyones collection.
If your favourite rum is listed below, and you live in the province of Ontario, you may want to run out to your local LCBO as soon as possible. These rums are either discontinued or gone for the season:

"Drinking rum before 10 am makes you a Pirate, not an alcoholic."
I have my sister to thank for this one. She's not much of a drinker, but she tells me how much she loves her Mount Gay Eclipse. I always figured that besides the very expensive Mount Gay 1703 (which I don't have), the line of Mount Gay products were just mixers (the Eclipse most definitely is). But after doing some research, found out that their XO is supposed to be quite rum. Let's find out.
